That's a good way of looking at it. The cover artist would paint a bizarre image like this and the writer would then create a short novel based on it. The explanations for often-seemingly supernatural stuff was always science-fiction based. No actual magic exsted in G-8's universe, so it was regularly a war story/SF mash-up.
