 Molle Mystery Theater: "The Further Adventures of Kenny Angles" 4/18/47

                        aka "Kenny Angles and the Queen of Diamonds"

Kenny Angles was a reoccuring character on Molle Mystery Theater--a non-too-bright Broadway tout who always ends up in trouble through pure bad luck. This time, he's suspected of being part of a jewel-theft gang. Kenny's long-suffering lawyer sends him to the library, figuring that there was no way he could get into more trouble there. This plan fails miserably.

A woman's body is stolen from the morgue. The morgue attendant and--later--an undertaker are murdered. It's up to private eyes Crane and O'Malley to find the killer in this goofy but entertaining mystery. 

This episode is a recording from when it was re-run on Mystery Playhouse, an Armed Forces Network show hosted by Peter Lorre.

Molle Mystery Theater: "Close Shave" 5/14/48

Ellen's boyfriend needs $10,000 immediately or his life will be ruined. At least, that's the story he tells Ellen. She decides to temporarily "borrow" the money from the store she works in to help the man she loves. He's promised to pay the money back before the store reopens on Monday.

What can possibly go wrong?

Molle Mystery Theater: “Two Men in a Furnished Room” 9/27/46


By the way, if anyone’s wondering why this episode introduces itself as a Mystery Playhouse episode, it’s because that show was an Armed Forces Radio Network anthology that did re-runs of various network shows. That’s the recording I happen to have of it. But it did originally air as an episode of the Molle Mystery Theater.

The plot involves one man urging his roommate to lie to help establish an alibi after a girl is murdered. That there will be a twist at the end is no surprise to anyone listening. What kept me interested was not just the skill with which the story was told, but also that I didn’t know exactly what the twist would be. It was equally likely that this could go in one of two directions, but I was guessing until the last moment which of those directions it would be.

Molle Mystery Theater: “St. Louis Lady” 8/23/46



Two men are in love with the same woman. She’s got to choose between them, but whatever way she goes will almost certainly lead to violence. One of her suitors makes his living by armed robbery. The other just finished a job that involved killing a mobster and his wife. Neither of them are likely to take rejection well.



This strong story leads up to what seems to be a predictable ending, but then suddenly twists into quite a surprise at the climax. The strong script is backed up by a good cast that includes veteran tough guy character actor Frank Lovejoy.
